MONUMENT NO. 1579817

DESCRIPTION + /

A Second World War military camp or workers hostel at Greenhill is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945. The camp consisted of accommodation huts and larger communal buildings. To the south was an area of open ground with an earth-covered structure (possibly an air raid shelter). The area also included disturbed ground and a possible gun emplacement. This camp was immediately to the west of another much larger camp (1579814) is one of a number of hostel sites near Corsham associated with the wartime use of the underground quarries for ammunition storage, factories or military headquarters. Air photos taken in 2009 show that with the exception of the possible air raid shelter which is covered in trees, the site has been demolished. (1-2)
