More information : A post medieval rifle range at Lane Hill, identified on the second edition 1898 Ordnance Survey map, is visible as a curving earthwork bank (centred at SD 5272 8413) on 2009 lidar imagery.
The rifle range is depicted on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map, and is illustrated to have been 800 yards in length, beginning close to Crooklands Farm, to the south-east of the target area.
It is possible that the firing range is related to the nearby Gatebeck Low Gunpowder Works (UID 1086908), located just over a kilometre to the east of the target area and contemporaneous in date (1-2). |
