More information : [NY 717662] [Conventional sign for site of Roman milestone] (1)
The O.S. siting of this milestone seems to depend on the incorrect inference by Watkin, that "the stone was found near, though not on the Stanegate". (2)
This inference was formerly rejected by Clayton (3) and by Wright, (4) who says that "the stone must belong to a series on the Military Way" (p.120). The inscription, which is agreed upon by all three, identifies this milestone as one of four (No.2306) (5) found in 1882 at NY 71796663, and now in Chesters Museum. See NY 76 NW 25. (3-5) |
