More information : [NY 7302 6705] Milecastle [G.S.] (Site of) (1)
A cottage, long removed, occupied the site of, and was built from, the materials of milecastle 41. Examined in 1946, it was of the short-axis type, but had undergone extensive reconstruction. (2-3)
The remains consist of turf-covered banks outlined by robber trenches. Condition poor. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
The site of the milecastle has been made obvious by the stone-grubbing activity, but the whole is meaningless in terms of original remains. (5)
The milecastle survives as turf-covered rubble about 0.5m high generally, but up to 1.2m high on the east externally; robber trenches are visible and there is a slight depression in the north-east corner. (6)
Recorded as part of the WHS aerial photography project. Condition as described. (7-9)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (10) |
