Summary : Pair of retorts formerly used to manufacture charcoal at the Gatebeck Low Gunpowder Works (UID 1086908), now set as posts for the factory gate. The company made its own charcoal between circa 1852 and 1866, after which it switched to buying supplies externally. The retorts were presumably reset as gateposts at or shortly after this date.
More information : SD 54375 85363 (GCE). Pair of retorts formerly used to manufacture charcoal at the Gatebeck Low Gunpowder Works (SD 58 NW 34), now set as posts for the factory gate. The company made its own charcoal between c 1852 and 1866, after which it switched to buying supplies externally. The retorts were presumably reset as gateposts at or shortly after this date. Surveyed at 1:1000 scale as part of the EH: Gatebeck Low Gunpowder Works Survey. See report (1a), photographs and archive in the NMR for further information. Other retorts survive reset as gateposts at the top of the access road to the Low Works and at the entrance to the former Cooperage that the company established in Gatebeck village in 1880 (SD 58 NW 95 and 96).
