Burnlaw is a farmhouse incorporating the remains of a bastle house, with 17th c. (datestone T.S.1662) and later additions.
In the cellar is a small, domestic chapel, which was probably used as a Quaker meeting house. See sketch plan, and G.Ps. AO 56/358/4 & 5 for N and S.E. aspects. (2)

NY 791575 Remains of bastle. (See Type Site NY 88 SE 14). The original building appears to have been a bastle measuring 43.5 feet by 23 feet internally. Against the North-East side is a two-storey building dated 1662. (4)
Burnlaw Farmhouse. Bastle of the 16th or early 17th century, remodelled and extended in the later 17th century (lintel inscribed '1662'), further extended in the 18th century and altered in the 19th century. The small chapel in the cellar was was probably once used as a Quaker meeting house. Listed Grade II. (5)
The bastle was built in 1602 and the house adjoining it in 1662. Listed by Cathcart King and by Dodds. (6,7) |
