Anchor Street, Phases I & Ii

Hob Uid: 1509177
Location :
Leeds
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SE3084331489
Summary : Nineteen seven-storey blocks and fourteen six-storey blocks, all with deck access, built as part of a public housing development in the Hunslet Green area. The seven-storey blocks contained a total of 545 dwellings. The six-storey blocks contained a total of 286 dwellings. The YDG 'Housing Mark I' industrialised building system of heavy pre-fabrication in concrete cross wall structure, was used for construction. Construction was approved by committee in 1968. All of the blocks are now demolished.
More information : The blocks were commissioned by Leeds County Borough Council. The Primary Name is the name that was given to the contract for the development. (1)

The Primary Street address best locates the former site. The individual addresses of each block are unknown. The Yorkshire Development Group (YDG) was a housing consortium of local authorities that was formed in order to increase efficiency in activities that related to the production of public housing in the region. The YDG building system used larger than normal pre-fabricated components, whereby the dwelling intself was conceived as a unit. (2)

The exact date of demolition is unknown. The Architects' Journal reported that demoliton of YDG blocks at Hunslet Grange began in January 1983 at an estimated cost of £400,000 as a result of remedial work being deemed too expensive. It is not known whether this demoltion refers to the Anchor St blocks, the neighbouring Leek St blocks (1507340) or both. (3)
