Summary : A First and Second World War memorial situated to the east of Three Island Pond at London Zoo. The memorial is to the employees of London Zoological Society who were killed in action during the wars and was designed by John James Joass in 1919. Its design is based on a French 'Lanterne des Morts' situated in the Creuse Valley at La Souterraine and is constructed of Portland Stone. It comprises an octagonal turret 5 metres in height and one metre wide situated on a three-step plinth. The memorial was originally located near the main gate but was moved to its present location in 1952. |
