The Primary Street address best identifies the centre of the former site. The individual addresses of each block are unknown. The Yorkshire Development Group (YDG) was a housing consortium of local authorities that was formed in order to increase efficiency in activities that related to the production of public housing in the region. The development was one of four YDG pilot schemes (Mark I version). The other schemes were in Nottingham, Sheffield and Hull. The YDG building system used larger than normal pre-fabricated components, whereby the dwelling intself was conceived as a unit. The Leek St development incorporated low-rise housing with multi-storey blocks, consisting of 31 blocks in total. The blocks provided one, two and three person flats, and four, five and six person maisonettes. Garages, a shop and a pub were also part of the development. 12.3 acres of slum clearance made way for the scheme. (3)
The exact date of demolition is unknown. The Architects' Journal reported that demoliton of YDG blocks at Hunslet Grange began in January 1983 at an estimated cost of £400,000 as a result of remedial work being deemed too expensive. It is not known whether this demoltion refers to the Leek St blocks, the neighbouring Anchor St blocks (1509177) or both. (4) |
