Summary : An aviary situated on Fellows Lawn in London Zoo which was part of the original Zoo, designed by Decimus Burton (1800-1881) the official architect for the London Zoological Society between 1830-41. The aviary was designed in 1829 by Burton as a summer cage for macaws and was originally located to the northwest of the Llama House (Monument HOB UID 619087). It is octagonal on plan, with a cast and wrought iron frame covered with wire mesh. During the 1840s the cage was used to house vultures. In 1927 the cage was renovated and in 1948 it was restored following war damage. In 1971 the structure was moved to its present location and the present brick plinth added. |
