DESCRIPTION

Five thirteen-storey tower blocks built as public housing as part of a development area in Scholes. The blocks are of ringbeam construction with brick infil panels and reinforced concrete gables. Four of the blocks contain 103 dwellings; the fifth block contains 99 dwellings, providing 511 dwellings in total. Construction was approved by committee in 1964.

The blocks were constucted by Wigan County Borough Council. (1)The Primary and Alternate addresses are the individual addresses of each block; all are current and of equal status. The Alternate Name is the name that was given to the contract for the development. (1)

Before being named, the blocks were described as Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5; it is not known which block is which. Construction of Block 1 began in April 1965. Construction of Block 2 started on 17th January 1966. Construction of Block 3 started on 12th September 1966. Construction of Block 4 started on 2nd November 1967. Construction of Block 5 started in June 1967. (2)

Rowlinson Construction Ltd.'s tender for Block 1 was £259,627. (3)
