More information : The blocks were constructed for Blackburn County Borough Council. The Alternate Name is the name that was given to the contract for the development. (1)
Bowland House is the name of the remaining block. The two demolished blocks were known as Ribble House and Pendle House. The date of demolition is unknown. Each floor contains six units. The bathrooms are all situated in the central core of the building and consequently have no direct sunlight. Each block was built with storage units, a caretaker's flat and a coin-operated laundry on the ground floor. Heating was orignally underfloor electric heating. Garages, car parking, a children's play area and landscaping were included in the contract. The blocks were officially opened by Councillor F. Jamieson on 4th February 1965. The brick cladding used is a mixture of Downings Sandface Tudor bricks and Downings Brampton Rustic bricks; different brick types are used on different elevations. The initial success of the blocks led to an identical development of three blocks at Queen's Park, which have since been demolished. (2) |
