BUST OF DARWIN

A twice life-size bust of Charles Darwin by American sculptor William Couper (1853-1942) is located in the portico of Christ's College, Cambridge. It was commissioned by the New York Academy of Sciences for the centenary celebrations of Darwin's birth in 1909. The original was given to the American Museum of Natural History and a second cast was made and donated to Christ's College. It was unveiled there as part of the 1909 centenary celebrations.
