More information : A Second World War pill box and a complex arrangement of barbed wire on the eastern side of RAF Catterick are visible as structures on historic air photographs around SE253 970. The pillbox was at SE2535 9718 and it was encircled by a rectilinear barbed wire enclosure. Barbed wire encircled the Castle Hills motte and bailey castle (UID 52302), which also housed a gun emplacement and anti air craft battery (UID 1391415) and defended the eastern side of RAF Catterick airfield between SE2517 9719 and SE2561 9673. This was probably part of a system of defences that encircled RAF Catterick UID1391330 (see also UIDs 1485642, 1485653, 1486058, 1485675, 1485653, 1486086 and 1486090). The pillbox does not appear to be in situ on the Google Earth photography and the barbed wire was probably removed shortly after the end of the war. (1-2) |
