More information : Two embanked features that may be the partial remains of Dere Street Roman Road (Linear 1031439) are visible as slight earthworks on historic air photographs, centred at SE241 970. These features are visible on the western side of the modern A1 to the north and south of Bainesse and they reflect the depiction of the Roman Road on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857. The northern section, which was approximately 225m long and centred at SE2399 9727, now appears to have been built over. The southern section, approximately 300m long and at SE2422 9697, appears to have been greatly levelled on the Google Earth photography.(1-3) |
