Summary : Large Lower Magnesian Limestone quarry situated to the west of Tadcaster and north of Lordswood Cricket School. The building stone used in the surviving fragments of the Norman Minster at York is identical to that produced at Smaws Quarry. The site is also a contender for the provision of stone for the buildings of Roman York. The quarry shown on the OS 25-inch 1st edition map of 1893 at Robshaw Hole, and a second quarry at Toulston Grange, may have been part of Smaws Quarry. |
