Summary : Surface and underground stone workings, worked at least the late 9th century until the 20th century. In the Medieval period, stone was quarried for Salisbury Cathedral and Clarendon Palace. From the end of the 17th century, the Portland Stone horizon was exploited. In 1938 the quarry was used to store ammunition, and continued to be used as a bomb store by the RAF until the 1990s. Stone is still being quaried for restoration work at Salisbury Cathedral. |
