BATHAMPTON DOWN LIMESTONE QUARRY

DESCRIPTION + /

18th century limestone quarry at the North-East corner of Bathampton Camp. Quarrying commenced in circa 1730 by Ralph Allen, but it declined by the end of the 18th century. It was reopened circa 1800 to supply stone for the Kennet and Avon Canal, to which it was connected by an inclined plane. The quarry is an irregularly shaped area of earthworks, and tramway routes are visible. The works closed in 1895.
