| Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy at Woldingham that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Kenley airfield. This site operated as both a 'Q-type' and 'QF' decoy. As a 'Q-type' night decoy it displayed a series of lights to simulate an active airfield, while as a 'QF' fire decoy controlled fires were lit to replicate an airfield targeted by bombs. The Woldingham site is referenced as being in use during 1941 and 1942. By the 1970s the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoy survive. Further bombing decoy sites for Royal Air Force Kenley airfield were located at South Godstone, Walton Heath and Farleigh. |
More information : A Second World War 'Q-type' bombing decoy located at Woldingham (TQ 388 560). It was constructed to deflect enemy night bombing from RAF Kenley airfield. It is referenced as being active between 01-AUG-1941 and 22-NOV-1942. (1)
By 1971 the Woldingham site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoy survive. (2)
