Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy located at Clyst St Mary that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Exeter airfield. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy, which displayed a series of lights simulating an active airfield. It is referenced as being operational between August and November 1942, during which month this site is also referenced as functioning as a 'QF' fire decoy. This is where controlled fires were lit at night to resemble an airfield targeted by bombs. By the 1960s the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoys survive. Further bombing decoy sites for Royal Air Force Exeter were located at Woodbury, Clyst Hydon and Aylesbeare Common. |
More information : A Second World War 'Q-type' and 'QF' bombing decoy located at Clyst St Mary (SX 993 917). It was constructed to deflect enemy bombing from RAF Exeter. The 'Q-type' night decoy is referenced as being operational between 12-AUG-1942 and 22-NOV-1942, and the 'QF' fire decoy is referenced as being in use on 22-NOV-1942. Further bombing decoy sites for RAF Exeter were located at Woodbury (SY 037 869), Clyst Hydon (ST 056 012) and Aylesbeare Common (SY 056 902). (1)
By 1967 the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoy survive, although it has been determined that a building originally stood at SX 993 921. (2)
