Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy at Kelfield that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Church Fenton airfield. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy, which displayed a series of lights simulating an active airfield. It is referenced as being in operation between August 1941 and August 1942. No features of the decoy survive and the site had been gived over to agricultural use by 1979. Further bombing decoy sites for Royal Air Force Church Fenton airfield were located at Hambleton and Menthorpe. |
More information : A Second World War bombing decoy located at Kelfield (SE 592 396). It was a 'Q-type' decoy built to deflect enemy night bombing from RAF Church Fenton. It was in operation between 01-AUG-1941 to 12-AUG-1942. Further bombing decoy sites for Church Fenton were located at Hambleton (SE 569 321) and Menthorpe (SE 694 353). (1)
No features of the bombing decoy survive and the site had been given over to agricultural use by 1979, as determined by aerial photography. (2)
