Coatham Pier
Hob Uid:
1463355
Location :
Redcar and Cleveland
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref :
NZ6013925460
Summary :
Coatham Pier began to be constructed in 1873 to a planned length of 2000 feet. However a storm caused considerable damage to the unfinished structure in 1874 and following ship collisions the final length was reduced to 1800 feet. The pier opened in 1875 and provided two pavilions to stage concerts and a roller-skating rink. In 1898, the Finnish barque 'Birger' collided with the pier and caused a 300 foot breach. The seaward end was dismantled, shortly followed by the rest of the pier in 1899. The entrance kiosks and roller-skating pavilion lasted up until around 1910. A new pavilion was later built but this was replaced by the Regent Cinema in 1964.
