Summary : Barrow 17. A Bronze Age saucer barrow situated 450 metres to the southeast of Sevenbarrows House, forming part of the Lambourn Seven Barrows Cemetery. The barrow, known as Barrow 17 by Case, survives as an earthwork with a diameter of 14 metres. The mound survives to a height of 0.3 metres and is surrounded by a ditch 2 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep. Traces of the outer bank no longer survive. Excavations during the 1850s located two inhumations, one of which was crouched. Flint tools and a beaker were also recovered. |

This barrow is one of thirty six barrows listed by Case (2) and is listed as Barrow 17. [see plan AO/LP/63/105 for numbering and siting]. The barrow was excavated by E.Martin Aktins in 1850-56, two inhumation burials were recorded. Scheduled. (2-7) The barrow (Barrow 17) has been identified on the ground and surveyed at 1:2500. SU 3279 8259, saucer barrow, depth of ditch is 0.3 metres. The outer bank has been destroyed. (8)
The barrow (Barrow 17) is visible as an earthwork and is as described above. It has been mapped from aerial photographs. (9)
A saucer barrow situated 450 metres to the southeast of Sevenbarrows House, forming part of the Lambourn Seven Barrows Cemetery. The barrow survives as an earthwork and has a diameter of 14 metres. The mound survives to a height of 0.3 metres and is surrounded by a ditch 2 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep. Traces of the outer bank no longer survive. Excavations during the 1850s located a crouched inhumation within the mound with flint tools and a beaker. This burial was overlain by another inhumation. (10) |
