Summary : One of a pair of Second World War Type 28a pillboxes is located on top of a narrow embankment between the railway and the Kennet and Avon Canal at Dun Lock Mill, Hungerford. The pillbox is positioned with its main field of fire to the west, along the line of the canal. The pillbox is clearly visible on aerial photographs taken from 1941 onwards. The pillbox is one of a number that were situated along the Kennet and Avon Canal. The canal formed part of the GHQ stop line, a line of anti-invasion defences intended to slow the advance of enemy troops. A second pillbox is located 12m to the east (see SU 36 NE 56).
