More information : A possible Roman fort is visible as cropmarks on air photographs. It is centred at SE 6040 0668.
The fort is located directly to the east of the river Don and consists of possibly four narrow and fragmented parallel ditches with a c.8m wide bank running between the inner two. The two outer ditches are separated from the bank by a gap of 6m. Internal measurement is hindered by the fragmentary nature of the perimeter features, but it would appear to measure approximately 166m long (from the centre of the bank on either side) by over 100m wide (its north-western extent is not visible on the air photographs available). It is orientated roughly north-east/south-west and on a similar alignment to that of a 'brickwork' field system to the east (SE 60 NW 24). The route of a conjectural Roman Road (Cantley Spur - RR281 - LINEAR 499) runs 200m to the east. An industrial estate overlies the site at present, but it is possible that some archaeology survives in open areas in the vicinity of the forts north corner. (1-2) |
