More information : The cropmarks of a possible Roman settlement and associated field system to the south west of Cattal are visible on aerial photographs.(1) Rectilinear enclosures, a trackway, field boundaries and other ditches of probable Iron Age or Roman date are visible as cropmarks on air photos around SE4425 5353. These features are located to the south-west of Cattal and the route of Rudgate Roman road (UID 1009681). At SE4426 5350 there is a substantial irregular enclosure, approximately 90m ling and 70m reducing to 35m wide. It appears to have a narrow internal ditch. It is flanked to the north and south by other rectilinear enclosures. This enclosure group abuts a near east to west linear that appears to form a broad trackway. Around the trackway and enclosure are the remains of a field system. (2-4)
