Summary : A Second World War type 24 pillbox located to the west of Moor Lane, Weston-super-Mare airport. The pillbox was constructed in 1940-41, built of reinforced concrete and former part of the defences to RAF West-super-Mare. A field visit in 1996 found the structure extant and in a good condition. |
More information : Type 22 pillbox. W of Moor Lane, Weston-super-Mare airport. (1)
The Second World War pillbox referred to above (1) is visible as a structure on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of the Mendip AONB NMP project. Although described as a Type 22 pillbox the aerial photographs suggest that it's a Type 24 pillbox which faces south with the entrance on the north side. This pillbox along with another pillbox and hardened gun post (ST35NW 41/HOB UID 1427625 and ST 35NW 71/HOB UIB 1427647), was probably built to defend the bridge across the Cross Rhyne. (2-3) |
