Summary : A World War II type 22 pillbox located on the southern shoreline of Thorney Island. The pillbox is hexagonal on plan, brick-shuttered and has unique brick and concrete embrasures and has an entrance on the northside. It was one of the earliest pillboxes built, constructed in July-August 1940 and formed part of RAF Thorney Island defences. Five Turnbull mountings were installed in March 1941. These were removed in the early 1950s, but the pintle and holding bolts survive, as they were cast into the concrete embrasures. A field visit of 1998 found the pillbox to be extant. |
