Summary : This Group Filter Room at Blakelaw Quarry was established shortly after the Battle of Britain to filter information on enemy air movements before passing the information to the Group Operations Room at Kenton Bar. In July 1943, 13 and 14 Group were amalgamated, and the filter room was redundant. In 1952, the Council bought the site as the Main Civil Defence Centre, and remained so until 1968. It remained on a maintenance footing until 2000, when the surface blockhouse was demolished and the rubble thrown into the subterranean rooms. |
