Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy at Aylesbeare Common that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Exeter. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy, which displayed a series of lights to simulate an active airfield. It is referenced as being in use during 1942. By the 1960s the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoy survive. Further bombing decoy sites for Royal Air Force Exeter were located at Woodbury, Clyst Hydon and Clyst St Mary. |

A Second World War 'Q-type' bombing decoy located at Aylesbeare Common (SY 056 902). It was constructed to deflect enemy bombing from RAF Exeter. It is referenced as being in use on 12-AUG-1942. Further bombing decoy sites for RAF Exeter were located at Woodbury (SY 037 869), Clyst Hydon (ST 056 012) and Clyst St Mary (SX 993 917). (2)
By 1966 the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the Aylesbeare Common decoy survive. (3)
