Licence to crenellate Blenkinsopp Castle was granted in 1340. Its remains, incorporated in the present 19th c. house of the same name, consist of the east wall of the entrance hall, and the NE tower. (2)
The castle was defended on the north and west sides by a deep ditch. (3)
Description correct and condition unchanged. Ditch re-surveyed at 1/2500. (4)
Blenkinsopp Castle (previously listed in the Civil Parish of Blenkinsopp). Grade II. House incorporating fragments of a medieval tower house. Licence to crenellate 1340; colliery agent's house added c.1832 (possibly by John Dobson); enlarged and largely rebuilt in Tudor style 1877-80 for William Lisle Blenkinsopp Coulson. Badly damaged by fire in 1954, ruining the Gothic house. The East wall of the renovated tower and a few other parts survive as interesting skeletons. (8)
