Summary : A World War Two blister aircraft hangar at RAF Northolt. It was built in 1943, and is situated on the south side of the flying field. The hangar is a curved, corrugated iron clad building, to which rendered ends have been added (possibly post-war). When it was visited by RCHME staff in 2000 it was in use as a storehouse, rather than as an aircraft hangar. The visit noted the building's steel frame. Steel framed blister hangars were generally larger than the standard blister and were designated as "Over-" or "Extra -Over" blister hangars. It is known as Building 348 in the RAF Northolt site internal numbering system. |
More information : The description in the monument record summary for this steel framed blister hangar is based on materials contained in the relevant Buildings File for RAF Northolt, which is held in the NMR. Please see related archive. (1)
The standard blister hangar was built with a wooden frame, Miskins Over- and Extra-Over (sized) blister hangars had steel frames for a larger span. (2) |
