Summary : In 1969, the opportunity arose to investigate the town defences of the colonia. A length of Roman wall wasdiscovered to the west of the Newport arch, and 80m form the centre of the arch, an interval tower was also located. It was not possible to determine its exact stratigraphic relationsship with the wall, but it is assumed to have butted to it, and therefore to post-date the wall's construction. The tower was 6m East to West by 4m North to South, and stood 2m high.
