Summary : The site of Roman Turret 48b on Hadrian's Wall. It is situated on the south bank of the River Irthing immediately east of Willowford Farm. It survives as a high-standing stone feature. The turret was excavated in 1923 by R. C Shaw.The excavated turret foundations are visible on air photographs and were mapped by Historic England as part of the English Heritage Trust's 'Hadrian's Wall: Birdoswald Sector Survey'. |

The excavated turret foundations are visible on air photographs and were mapped by Historic England as part of the English Heritage Trust's 'Hadrian's Wall: Birdoswald Sector Survey'. The north-west, north-east and south-east walls are visible. Hadrian's Wall (1449984 - as mapped from air photographs) clearly abuts the turret. (9) |
