SO 3709 6410. An oval mound, possibly of Medieval or Post Medieval date, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and has been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. The dimensions of the mound are 45m x 30m. Its function is unknown. (1-2)
This mound appears to be the same as the mound identified as the site of Byton motte, a late 13th century motte built in response to the depradations of Llewelyn ap Grufydd. The motte stands on a ridge and has a smal rectangular enclosuere with a structure interpretted as a chapel, known to have survived into the 19th century. The mote rises 25 feet above the stream to the east. he top of the motte appears to supported a keep. There is a platform on the south side which may mark the site of a gatehouse. (3)
