St Cuthberts Church

Hob Uid: 13957
Location :
Cumbria
Carlisle
Upper Denton
Grid Ref : NY6156265513
Summary : An early 12th century church consisting of a two bay nave and single bay chancel which was declared redundant in the late 1970s. It survives well and retains medieval fabric together with stonework removed from Hadrian's Wall. The church is believed to contain an arch from Birdoswald Roman fort.
More information : [NY 61566551] Church [NAT] (1)

Upper Denton church, restored in 1881, is built of Roman stones, the chancel arch being a reconstructed Roman arch probably brought from Birdoswald Roman fort (NY 66 NW 14). A Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter was found in 1881 reused in the steps to the altar. It is now (1941) in the garden of Gilsland Vicarage. Although the church contains Norman material Pevsner comments that the east quoins are of the Anglo Saxon type with some upright stones. Grade B. (2-4)

The church is in normal use. Although the east quoins are of long and short work, they do not appear to be of any great age. The present whereabouts of the altar could not be ascertained. (5)

Upper Denton church (wrongly described as St. Cuthberts) consists of simple nave and chancel and is largely built of Roman stone with some Saxon and much Norman masonry. (6)

Upper Denton Church
Grade II*
Redundant Church. Probably early C12, with alterations dated 1881 on lead rainwater heads. Calciferous sandstone squared coursed rubble from the nearby Roman Wall, large flush quoins; stone slate roof with coped gables and kneelers. 2-bay nave and single-bay chancel. Nave has west bellcote, rebuilt with west wall in the 18th century. Chancel arch is Roman and reputedly to have come from the nearby Birdoswald Roman Fort. (7)
