Crags Cottages

Hob Uid: 1388127
Location :
Northumberland
Greystead
Grid Ref : NY7520085500
Summary : There is a string of ruined cottages above Stokoe Crags, and once called Crag Cottages for that reason. The main building measures about 33 feet by 20 feet and still has some thick walling, as high as 8 feet in places. This was undoubtedly a bastle, but the building adjoining to the its east is puzzling. It measures 40 feet long, but is only 15 feet wide. It is therefore more like a long house, but its construction is very bastle-like, and there is a partly-blocked gun loop in its gable wall.
