Summary : Low Swinhope Shield farmhouse is a bastle derivative. Its originallength is marked by large quoin stones. The wall between the living room and the kitchen is over three feet thick and provides clear internal evidence that the house has been lengthened. A former bastle stood next to the farmhouse, but it was demolished in 1990, a new house being built on the foundations in 1991.
