More information : The Defence of Britain Database catalogue records a pillbox located "to the west of Leaves Green Road, 600 yards from the entrance to Biggin Hill Airport", said to be at TQ 412 611. The pillbox was part of the Airfield's Ground defences. When visited by a Defence of Britain project recorder on 06-JUN-1997, the pillbox was extant and said to be in good condition. It was described as a "five-sided brick and concrete observation and sentry-type pillbox, with four long embrasures. The Brickwork is only 4.5ins thick...and has four reinforced concrete columns at the corners to support the concrete roof. There is also a small floor channel to allow rainwater to drain outside". The pillbox was allegedly built between 1940 and 1941. (1) |
