Summary : A prehistoric, possibly Bronze Age circular enclosure, perhaps a shrine, seen as a cropmark on air photographs. |
More information : AT SE 8682 6622 is a circular enclosure 76m dia. with a concentric inner circular structure of 19m dia. This feature lies immediately adjacent to the source spring of the Gypsey Race. It is this fact that suggests the feature may be a shrine. It may also be significant that the feature lies between the spring and the site of the Wharram le Street villa (UID: 1315010), in fact the two are only seperated by the width of the north-south running droveway that appears to be contemporary with the villa. The circular enclosure was not known before the 1999 photography but during the investigation of the vila site one of the random test pits did hit the outer ditch fill; this contained no Roman or RB artifacts. Further air photographs taken in 2006 and 2015 show the feature described above showing clearly as cropmarks. The inner concentric circular ditch is in fact a pennanular ditch with an east-facing entrance. (2,3) |
