Inscription, 16-1/2 X 9-1/2 in. (1/8), perhaps from a tombstone, seen by Horsley before 1732 built into the bridge at Appleby; probably brought from Kirkby Thore, which lies 4 miles to the north-west. Taken out of the bridge during repairs in 1847, and seen by Bruce when in the possession of John Bell, of Appleby. Now lost. Sought in vain by R. P. W., 1945. Reproduced from Bruce.

Horsley describes the stone as 'so much effaced, as to be unintelligible'. About one nd a half centuries later Mossman, Bruce's draughtsman, probably based his block more upon a transcript of Horsley than upon what he could actually see R. P. W. (1)
