Cairn and boundary stone depicted and described by Butler. (2)
SX 59116376. A disturbed cairn and recumbent boundary stone on the moderate SW flank of Shell Top.
The cairn measures 6.7m N to S by 7.0m and stands a maximum of 0.9m high. The centre is occupied by two amorphous hollows. There is no evidence to suggest the former presence of a cist or kerb.
Adjacent to the SW fringe of the cairn is a recumbent boundary stone 1.5m long, a maximum of 0.55m wide and 0.2m thick. The exposed face displays the inscribed letters 'B' and 'C'. (3)
The Bronze Age cairn, recorded by previous authorities, is visible as an earthwork on Environment Agency 1m Lidar data flown in 2019 and 2021 Historic England orthomosaic aerial photography. The site was mapped from aerial sources in 2023 during the Historic England Dartmoor-Plym project. It is centred on SX 59109 63753. The cairn mound measures approximately 9.2m in diameter. A hollow in the top of the cairn measures about 2.2m across. The post-medieval boundary stone is at SX 59105 63751 on the south-west edge of the cairn. (4-5)
