More information : Centred SX 59276654. A numjber of circular and crescentic earthworks on either side of Shavercombe Brook near its confluence with the River Plym. All appear to be of relatively recent military.
A number of similar pits containing military debris are cut into several archaeological features on the slopes N of Shavercombe Tor while a cluster of similar though larger features lie to the W of the Tor. Many of the latter have been interpreted as hut circles. (see SX 56 NE 97). (1)
Second World War weapons pits, some recorded by previous authorities, are visible as earthworks on Environment Agency 1m Lidar data flown in 2019 and 2021 Historic England orthomosaic aerial photography. The examples immediately to the south of the confluence of the River Plym and Shavercombe Brook are now recorded as part of NHLE 1405454. At least eight sub-circular weapons pits, defined by earthwork banks protecting small low areas, are scattered on and around the edge of the steep scarps of a tin-works opencut to the north of Shavercombe Brook (NRHE 1362143). Each measures about 4m across. (2-3)
