Summary : House of mid-16th century date, originally incorporating a 14th century pele tower which was demolished c.1750. It was altered in the 19th century. Two storeyed and T-shaped in plan, built of stone rubble with slate roofs. It stands on a moated site. |
More information : (NY 620148) Crosby Hall (NR). (1) A pele tower was erected here c 1350 and the Manor House was added some 200 years later. The ruins of the tower were pulled down c1750 (2). The building was Gothicized in the 19th c (3). The courtyard of the present Hall is on the site of the ancient Grange (2). The moat forms a polygonal island, but the E arm and part of the SE arm have been filled in. There are traces of an outer bank on the NW and SW and of an inner bank near the N angle (4). The hall has been modernised to a large extent and is not outstanding. (See photograph). Of the moat surrounding the hall only the west side and parts of the north and south arms are now extant.
