Summary : Canal built 1771-4 between Chester and Nantwich. 19 miles long containing 17 locks of 14 foot width and 72 feet long.
More information : Recorded by NRIM. Originally constucted to connect the agricultural district aaround Nantwich with Chester. Proposed branch to Middlewich and the salt mines was not enacted until 1830 due to the opposition of the rent and Mersey Canal owners. There is a complete cast iron lock chamber at Baston, built by Thomas Telford ca 1820. The Northgate locks were originally a rise of 5 locks, but these were altered when the Ellesmere Wirral line was built in 175. (1)
