Oxney's or Steele's Gate was a passage through the 21ft wide eighth tower. It was demolished in 1776. The gap left by the destroyed tower became known as Theatre of Playhouse gate from the theatre which was erected on the plain within the wall, between this gate and the Main Guard in 1778. The fractured end of the adjoining wall is visible between shop fronts on the south side. (For a general history of the Medieval Town Wall, see TG 50 NW 2). (2,3)
