(TG 52200767) Site of St. Francis' Priory (Fransiscan) (NAT) (3)

St Francis Priory was at TG 52390732. See TG 50 NW 12. (4)

The site at TG 52210767 is possibly that of the Carmelite Priory. (5)

In 1276 the Carmelites asked for permission to occupy and build a church on a vacant plot and Edward I was considered the founder. The priory, dedicated to St Mary, was enlarged in 1378, burnt down in 1509 and suppressed late 1538. In 1957, human skeletons from the burial ground of the priory were found at TG 521077, while in 1964 mortared flint foundations, possibly part of the Carmelite foundation were discovered during foundation digging at TG 52120774. (6-9)

An octagonal tower three storeys high, in use as a spiral staircase for a department store, is the sole possible remains of this priory. Cement rendered it impossible to date from visual inspection alone. Ground photograph. (10)
