Summary : A rectangular mound erected in 1590 at the South-west corner of the town wall, between the South Gate and the River Yare, to cover the southern approach to the town and the boom over the river. It mounted 7 heavy guns on its summit. Removed during the 19th century. |

South Mount was a large earthen mound erected in the C16th, during the wars with Spain, as an emplacement for ordnance. Palmer in 1864 mentions that the mount was removed 'within the last few years'. (For a general history of the Medieval Town Wall, see TG 50 NW 2). (2,3)
No trace. The levelled area is in use as a scrapyard. (4)
