Summary : A World War II Heavy Anti Aircraft gunsite known as TN7 (Thames North) Furtherwick located 170 metres south west of the junction of Cedar Road and West Crescent in an area of land known locally as The Gunney or The Gunnery. Four octagonal gun emplacements, a bomb proof shelter, a magazine bunker and a command post survive buried beneath earthen mounds which are now part of a childrens playground. A further two square gun emplacements, an ancillary building and the gun crew barracks have been demolished to make way for modern housing. Scheduled. |
More information : A World War II Heavy Anti Aircraft gunsite known as TN7 (Thames North) Furtherwick located 170 metres south west of the junction of Cedar Road and West Crescent in an area of land known locally as The Gunney or The Gunnery. Four octagonal gun emplacements, a bomb proof shelter, a magazine bunker and a command post survive buried beneath earthen mounds which are now part of a childrens playground. A further two square gun emplacements, an ancillary building and the gun crew barracks have been demolished to make way for a modern housing development. War Office documents record that the battery was operational from 1940 to 1946 during which it was equipped with four 4.5 inch AA guns and a GL Mk II fire control radar. In 1942 it was manned by 11 Battery of the 2nd Royal Artillery Regiment, and in 1943 it was manned by 625 Battery of the 184th Royal Artillery Regiment, a mixed sex battery including women from the Auxiliary Territorial Service. It was retained as an Off-Site Nucleus Force Battery in 1946. (1)
