Farewell Nunnery

Hob Uid: 1334494
Location :
Staffordshire
Lichfield
Farewell and Chorley
Grid Ref : SK0832011620
Summary : St Mary's nunnery was founded between 1129-1148 by Bishop Roger de Clinton of Lichfield, on a site occupied by 3 hermits or canon brothers. It appears to have been founded as an abbey, but was reduced to a priory by 1210. Masefield suggests that it was originally a Cistercian foundation. It was dissolved in 1527. The parish church of St Bartholomew contains 14th century material which may be part of the original nunnery complex in situ, or may be reused material.
